Saturday 4th July – Windsurf *** River Orwell at Levington – sunny
periods and hot.
Foil – 17.77 knot max, 16.50 knot ave., 6.63 knot hour, 12.99 knot mile,
41.98 km., 14.42 knot alpha.
Starboard Freeride 150 and a Tushingham Bolt 5.75.
Todays forecast looked OK with a moderate breeze from the west and with
high tide on the Orwell just past 3 several were going to the Stour but I
couldn’t face the 50 mile drive so headed over to Levington again
arriving at the marina at 9.30 with the tide very low. I quickly set-up my
foil board but sail choice was harder, I toyed with rigging my 7.5 but went
with my 6.5 and was already to go when the breeze really picked up, gusting
to 22 knots at the side, probably more in the middle of the river so
quickly changed down to my 5.75, to be honest whatever sail I rigged to day
would not have been right as the wind was all over the place in both
strength and direction swinging from wsw to wnw and 10 to 22 knots ! It was
great while flying when the wind was up but there were lots of lulls, I
don’t think I have ever seen so many yachts out sailing mainly towards
Felixstowe docks which was good fun. I started off sailing to the corner
and tried so runs down towards the docks but quickly ran out of wind so
stayed on the corner for a bit! I then slowly made my way up river to see
if there was any more wind there but it was still gusty. Then two barges
sailing down from Ipswich were slowly making their way to Felixstowe docks
so I did a couple of fly pasts, its always great to see these old boats out
on the water and the people onboard looked to be enjoying their day with
the sun out and a breeze in their face! The wind then went light and I was
slowly making my way back to call it a day when I noticed that the van door
was open meaning Mag had arrived having cycled over, I was also joined on
the water by four wingers including 3 ladies. I turned to land when the
wind came back so I had several nice runs across the corner with the river
really turning flat, Mag was on camera duty and got some cracking shots
with my big lens. It really was time to call it a day now as the wind
really was patchy so I joined my in the van for lunch as the two barges
returned. Then all I had to do was pack up and head for home, not my best
session but still sailed 26 miles in the warm sunshine:)
